Commuting 101

I am now among the thousands of daily commuters taking public utility vehicles to reach my destinations. I used to dread taking public transport what with my close encounters with snatchers in the past which happened inside a jeepney. But after I gave birth just recently, I restrain myself from taking cabs because it’s already taking a huge chunk of my expenses considering that I live in Mactan Island. For more than a week now, I’ve been commuting from home to the office and back and I have these thoughts to share:

* Always stuff your wallet with lots of coins. It’s very convenient for both you
and the driver coz you don’t have to wait long for your change.

* Look at the signboards and make sure you’re taking the right jeepney. I once took the wrong ride and it cost me seven pesos, additional ten-minute ride and buckets of sweat.

* Don’t forget the magic words. Say “please” when you’re asking someone to pass on the fare. Say “excuse me” when you’re trying to make your way to the available seat. Say “I’m sorry” if you step on someone’s toes. In my clumsiness, I happen to step on some passenger's toes most of the time.

* Be prepared at all times. You’ll never know the weather for the day. An umbrella, shades and a little towel or hanky would come in very handy rain or shine.

* Be attentive to the sights, sounds and smell. It may be the stinky smell of the person beside you or the beautiful view from the Mactan Bridge during midnight with all the tiny city lights from afar. I tell you, the view is actually breathtaking.

* Other than your cellphone, never bring any other expensive gadgets like laptop or digital cameras unless really needed. We never know when these snatchers and robbers strike.

* I just realized how big my savings whenever I take public transport --- really big.

To all commuters like me, hope above tips are beneficial to you on your daily journeys.
